Depression Medication Issues: The Use of Meridia for Depression

Depression affects a lot of people all over the world. Treatments and medication for depression can vary from one person to another. Lately there has been some controversy over the use of the weight loss drug Meridia for depression. There have been reports saying that people using Meridia for obesity issues experienced beneficial mood altering side effects from the said drug. The issue at hand is how effective is Meridia as a treatment for depression?

Learning the Basics of Meridia

Sibutramine hydrochloride, popularly known as Meridia, is a drug intended for the weight management of severely obese people. This drug is best for people with obesity that also have other conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol.

Meridia works by boosting your levels of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinehprine. These are chemical messengers that help keep your brain properly functioning. When these hormones are absent in your system, you develop depression, obesity and other conditions.

Meridia For Depression — Truth or Fallacy?

A number of patients who have used Meridia reported that they got a 'good feeling' from it. Meridia stabilizes serotonin levels in your brain that is why you may suddenly get that ‘oh so happy-happy joy-joy’ kind of feeling. Unfortunately this good feeling effect of Meridia doesn't last long.

Although some consider Meridia as a prospective treatment for depression, the medical society as a whole does not approve of Meridia for depression.

Meridia's Side Effects

Some people may experience side effects from Meridia, while some may not. Some side effects of Meridia are anxiety, abdominal pain, back pain, constipation, dizziness, headaches, insomnia, stomach-aches, rash, joint pains, sore throat, nausea AND depression.

Surprisingly as it may seem, one of the biggest complaints of Meridia users is that the drug causes them depression. This is why the use of Meridia for depression is not approved, because Meridia can actually cause you to have a more severe case of depression than the one you may already have.

Playing Safe

If you are taking Meridia now and you are starting to feel the adverse effects, you should report it to your doctor immediately. Also, if you are using it for depression treatment because you find pleasure in the euphoria and happiness it brings you temporarily, you should also tell your doctor.

If your doctor did not prescribe the Meridia for your depression, your best course of action is to consult with a doctor before you continue to use the drug. Not only because it could worsen your depression but because it may also have adverse effects with other medications you are taking.
