Tips for Overcoming
Depression
Overcoming depression is possible. Many people need the aid of
an anti depression medication to help them begin the journey of
overcoming depression. Other people may need the help of a
therapist. When medication and therapy are used jointly,
overcoming depression can begin to seem like a possibility for
people.
Whether you have been placed on medication and are involved in
therapy or not, there are things you can do to help you
overcome depression. One of the first steps in overcoming
depression is getting involved in life. People who are
depressed truly have a lack of interest in things they once
enjoyed. By making yourself participate in things that were
once enjoyable, it can go far in overcoming depression. Having
interests and participating in activities can boost your self
esteem and promote a feeling of happiness and a sense of
belonging.
You should try to engage in numerous activities. Some
activities should involve social interaction and others should
be solitary activities. You can help a sick or old person,
paint, go to the movies, participate in a sport, read, go to
church, visit with family and friends, go to the park, go to a
spa, plant a garden, rescue a pet, reorganize your home and
more. It is important that you have various interests and
activities to stimulate your brain and your mood.
One way people find they can motivate themselves to do an
activity is by offering themselves a reward. For instance, if
you go to visit your family or friends for the afternoon, you
can reward yourself with lying in bed and watching a movie in
the evening. Or, if you organize and clean your closet, you can
indulge in a sweet food before bed.
Another step to overcoming depression is learning to think
positive and learning how to make the most of a bad situation.
People who are depressed have cloudy outlooks. If you can
recognize this and make the conscious attempt to see the bright
side of things it can go far in overcoming depression. Come up
with something to say in your head when you hear those negative
thoughts.
Also, re-examine your expectations on people, life and
yourself. While some things in life will not change, some
things in life can. For instance, if you are grieving the loss
of a loved one you cannot bring him or her back, no matter how
hard you wish it were so. However, what can you do to feel
closer to that person? You can write your thoughts down in a
journal, volunteer your time to a charity that reminds you of
that person, visit someone who is ill, plant a memory garden
and more. Learning how to channel bad situations into something
more positive can go far in helping you over depression.
Another step to overcoming depression is identifying your bad
habits and working through any personal problems you may have.
Identify one or two bad habits that you have and work on them.
For instance, if you have a habit of sleeping until noon, set
your alarm for 10:30. The next morning, set the alarm for
10:00. Continue to get up earlier until your sleeping pattern
has regulated. Do you have a bad habit of drinking or smoking
when you are stressed or feeling down? If so, cut back on those
habits and start new, healthier habits.
Lastly, overcoming depression is often helped by surrounding
yourself with people who care about you. This doesn’t
necessarily have to be people you know in your day to day life,
either. You can join an online support group and make friends
with people who are going through similar experiences in their
life.
