Educate Yourself On The Signs Of
Depression
You should be mindful of the signs of depression. These signs
will help you monitor your mental health, as well as at health
of your family and friends. Depression is marked by a
combination of symptoms that last for at least two weeks
without there being any sign of improvement. Here is a list of
the general signs and symptoms of depression
Sadness, anxiousness and an empty mood is a sign of depression.
The sadness is not the normal “blues” that many people feel on
occasion. It is a persistent sadness that the individual cannot
shake. The person may be teary eyed and cry. Anxiousness is not
the usual nervousness that we all feel sometimes. This type of
anxiousness makes it hard for the person to function. It is
sometimes marked by fears and/or phobias. A person that is
apathetic and seems to not feel anything may also have
depression.
A feeling of helplessness, worthlessness and guilt can also be
a sign of depression. The individual may not feel worthy of
anyone’s time, attention or praise. They may not feel worthy of
anyone’s love and they may feel guilty if someone goes out of
their way to help them in some way. Guilt may also arise over a
past event that the person is dwelling on. The individual may
also be very pessimistic, negative and have a bleak outlook on
the future. All of this may be a sign of
depression.
An individual who is depressed is generally not interested in
anything. He or she does not enjoy the things they once did.
This is a sign of depression, especially if it is accompanied
by fatigue and low energy levels. A depressed person may find
it hard to get out of the bed and go about the day. While it
may appear people who are depressed are constantly sleeping,
their sleeping is usually disturbed and not peaceful.
People who are depressed may have drastic changes in their
appetite. This is another sign of depression. Individuals may
lose their appetite and much weight or they may have an
increase in their appetite and put on weight. Leading a
sedentary lifestyle increases the chance that a depressed
person will gain weight.
Individuals who are depressed may have thoughts of suicide or
dwell on death. This is a sign of depression that should not be
ignored. If someone you know, or yourself, is having this
thoughts you should seek out help immediately.
Individuals who are depressed need to find that ray of light at
the end of the tunnel. The good news is that the symptoms of
depression are treatable. Through anti depression medication,
therapy and self help tools, individuals can triumph over their
depression and get back to living again. If someone you know is
depressed and is adamant about not wanting to get on
medication, try to encourage him or her to at least get into
therapy. Not only can therapy help them get to the root of
their depression, but it will give you peace of mind knowing
that they are under the supervision of a professional. It can
take the burden off of you and help to alleviate some of the
weight you may feel in regards to your depressed loved
one.
