Depression in Men: The Brave Man's
Struggle
Most people think that women are more likely to be affected by
depression; but contrary to popular opinion, the ratio of
depression in men is greater than that of the women. Research
shows that more men suffer from depression because they tend to
mask their problems. While women are believed to burst out into
tears more often, men are assumed to have saved those tears and
keep what they really feel inside them. Because of this typical
manly reaction, their battle for loneliness is conquered on the
inside rather than on the outside.
In all parts of the world, men are thought to be the ones who
have a strong heart. Unbeknownst to many, beyond their mannish
façade is a weak and tamely heart. We must remember that we are
all equal beings, and it is only but rightful to recollect that
the weight of every burden we carry has the same impact on
anybody else.
How Depression in Men Transpires
The exact explanation for why depression in men happens may
never be understood. However, there are a number of factors
which contribute to the occurrence of this disorder.
First, lack of family support in times of stress makes a man
feel dejected and utterly miserable. Second, a man tends to
hide his feelings and keeps the problem to himself; he never
lets out a word and instead keeps silent about his
tribulations. Lastly, men do not want to feel weak, they would
like to appear strong in everybody's eyes. Having researched
all these, one can categorically say that depression in men is
truly a likely occurrence.
The Initial Indicators of Depression in Men
Some men reveal their feelings of depression by gearing
themselves toward purposeless activities such as alcohol
drinking and gambling. Others may show lack of interest in
social activities, while others may have feelings of loneliness
and would always prefer to remain alone.
Another important characteristic of depression in men is
recurrent thoughts of death. Although the symptoms may differ
from one person to another, the aforementioned indicators are
most likely to occur initially. Before these feelings get
worse, it is essential to consult a specialist for this type of
disorder.
The Difference between Depression in Men and Women
In general, men do not feel open about their problems since
they sense the need to be manly and strong in front of others.
Women are generally chatty about how they feel, allowing them
to express and expose their hidden burdens and sorrows.
Perhaps, this may be the reason why men find it hard to accept
that they are sick and need help.
Instead of admitting that they have a problem, men divert their
attention to something meaningless and bury the entire plight
in his head. A woman who suffers from depression typically
blames herself, but men don't; they tend to be violent and
abusive to others and they also blame others for their
mishap.
They say that women have a better coping mechanism than men,
but it never really works this way. Curing yourself from a
psychological problem is a matter dealt by you and should be
handled by you. The guide to mending ourselves is the way we
see life. If one believes that he can do it, he can undoubtedly
succeed with it.
