The Connection Between Body Image and Self
Esteem
Self esteem is a necessary aspect of human nature that allows
one to normally mingle and interact with others. People with
low self esteem will have difficulty with allowing people to
come closer to them and with interacting with others. There is
a definite connection between body image and self esteem. The
connection between body image and self esteem is actually one
of the factors that can improve one's self worth and self
regard.
How You Perceive Yourself Physically
Body image and self esteem connect in how you see yourself.
Many people are so insecure about their looks and bodies that
they have low self esteem. One of the keys to improving self
esteem is to realize the connection between body image and self
esteem. This does not necessarily mean that you need to alter
your image in order to fit in with society but instead you need
to make changes and improvements in your body image and self
esteem to feel good about yourself.
Your body image and self esteem are connected because feeling
healthy and well cared for can improve the self worth in a
person. It does not need drastic changes like plastic surgery
because improving your overall appearance is not the main point
here. The main point is to feel good about yourself physically.
The effect of body image on self esteem levels does not
necessarily lie on good looks but on how healthy you feel. A
healthy body affects a healthy mind.
Having said all that, improving how you look can also have a
positive effect on your self esteem. Physical deformities can
contribute to low self esteem or the lack thereof. Body image
and self esteem is also connected because having deformities,
scars and other blemishes can affect a person. The level of
physical dissatisfaction may be not as deep as others but some
people are so insecure of even the slightest thing.
The link between body image and self esteem has been
established; therefore, how you go about improving your self
esteem by improving your overall body image is up to you. Many
people actually realize that they need to do something about
their body image and self esteem but are too lazy to start it
or they have no idea where to start. Realizing that there is a
connection between both body image and self esteem can be the
first step to improving one's self worth and self
esteem.
